Preferred Route Identified For First Phase Of Twinning Highway 17 West

Engineers have come out with a preferred route to begin the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Kenora.

Neil Ahmed is a project manager with WSP and is working on the twinning and says they take a number of factors into consideration.

“We look at all the natural, social, heritage, community, archeology”. he says.

“A lot of different factors come into play with this kind of work. We have to go through a lot of field work and investigation and discussion with different agencies and the community that live here to make sure we get it right.”

Ahmed says they are currently going through the Environmental Assessment stage.

“Trying to get some construction underway, and so we’re starting with a smaller section first, allows construction to start quicker.”

Details of the twinning project were presented at a public information session yesterday.

The operating construction schedule for the first section, a 6.5km stretch from the Manitoba/ Ontario border and Highway #673, is Fall of 2019.
