The Ontario Liberals are being accused of shifting the responsibility for the cleanup of mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River system.
In the Legislature, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell expressed outrage for putting the complete onus on Domtar.
Campbell calls the offloading a cynical ploy to delay action on cleaning up the mercury.
She is demanding the government to stop stalling and take action.
Campbell stresses families in Grassy Narrows and White Dog First Nation are literally dying of mercury poisoning.
Ontario’s Superior Court previously ruled it’s illegal for the province to pass responsibility for the cleanup to another party.
Campbell claims the Premier doesn’t care that what she is doing is illegal and she is poised to lose another court battle.
Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Glen Murray says they are enforcing the law and doing what’s right.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says the government is calling on Domtar to take responsibility but notes the move is not stopping the government from cleaning up the water.
She says work is already underway in clean-up efforts.
