Preventing High School Dropouts

The Rainy River District School Board is playing a lead role in a program designed to discourage drop-outs in Northern Ontario and keep students in school until age 18.

Superintendent of Education Terry Ellwood says the ministry of education is providing a 1.5 million dollar grant for the initiative which consists of three components.

Ellwood notes secondary students will get help to boost literacy skills, have the option of attending an alternative education program or get help if out of school and want to return.

The provincial funding came through a joint proposal from eight school boards and 10 school authorities across Northern Ontario.
