Fixed electricity contracts could be a thing of the past if the NDP has its way.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell has introduced a private members bill targeting energy retailers.
Campbell says the sales tactics of energy retailers are one of the most common complaints received by her office.
She says seniors and those on fixed incomes are being “roped” into signing these agreements and are being convinced that they will save money in the long run.
Campbell suggests that retailers are bullying local residents.
A recent report by Ontario’s Auditor General found that about 15% of homeowners have signed energy contracts, but are paying anywhere from 35-65% more for their electricity.
