The provincial government is moving forward with a promise to fund mercury cleanup and remediation efforts in the English-Wabigoon River system.
Speaking in the Legislature, Minister of Indigenous, Relations and Reconciliation David Zimmer stated Tuesday’s fall economic statement included a pledge to establish an $85-million trust fund.
The trust still needs royal assent.
Zimmer says they have a plan in place to deal with the mercury pollution on Grassy Narrows and on the Domtar site in Dryden.
He stresses he’s taking the issue seriously, noting they recently provided about $5.2-million to support pre-remediation work.
Zimmer adds he continues to work with the leadership of Grassy Narrows and White Dog First Nations.
The government has also indicated that all future data, methods and results related to the issue will be made public.
