Ontario politicians are taking time to reflect back on the residential school system.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says residents need to take it upon themselves to improve relationships with First Nations.
Wynne stresses residential schools have scarred aboriginal communities and that has left a legacy of racism that continues to echo in the lives of aboriginal people.
Jim Wilson of the Progressive Conservatives says we need to try and improve on our shameful past.
Wilson believes the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will help future generations learn from a dark past and bring some closure.
Meanwhile, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says it’s a disgrace that some First Nation communities rely on diesel fuel for electricity and still don’t have clean drinking water.
