Provincial Support To Aid Local Physician Shortage

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is expanding.

The provincial government has announced an additional 30 medical degree and 41 residency spots over the next five years.

According to estimates from the University, more than 300 physicians are needed in the north and that number doesn’t factor retirements that may take place over the next five years.

School officials say this will help them more forward to address the urgent workforce shortage and strengthen local services.

NOSM currently enrolls 64 MD students and 60 first-year residents per year.

Several groups, including the Ontario Medical Association, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association had lobbied for more space.
