Public Board Looking At Options To Fix Sioux Lookout School

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is looking at its options to address incomplete work at Sioux North High School.

Superintendent of Business Richard Findlay says negotiations with contractor Everstrong are ongoing.

“We’ve made progress on the current deficiency backlog which has occurred over this past summer and early this fall. Some progress has been made on that. We have ongoing planning and coordination that’s still occurring for a chance to complete the remaining work and address the deficiencies.”

Findlay adds “Negotiations with the contractor are ongoing. The Board will endeavour to take the most prudent course of action after consulting with relevant stakeholders and our Legal Counsel.”

The $30-million school, designed for 500 students, opened in May 2019.

A Board report indicates “Some of the items rectified included door hardware, fire-proofing corridor separations, ceiling tile replacement throughout, and roof leaks in original locations. However, new leaks were reported in October 2020 and will be corrected as soon as possible. Ongoing planning and coordination is still occurring with attempts to complete the remaining work. There is still an unacceptable amount of significant deficiencies and incomplete work. As a result, the Board is looking at options to complete the work as expeditiously as possible while limiting our financial obligations.”

Findlay stresses “Our number one priority at Keewatin-Patricia is, and always will be, our students. As such we work with all of our contractors to ensure our students have the best possible environment there is.”
