Rainy River Community College in International Falls is benching its Women’s hockey team for a year.
Difficulties in recruiting is to blame.
School athletic director Mel Millerbernd says an increase in teams has made it tougher for coaches to recruit.
Millerbernd adds attracting girls from northwestern Ontario high school’s is also being hurt by the lower Canadian dollar.
She says growth in women’s hockey is also giving student athletes more options.
Rainy River College reached the ACHA Division 2 final last year.
Just eight players have been signed for this season.
Millerbernd stresses the women’s hockey program will be back for sure next year.
