Red Lake Fire Receives New Alarms

Enbridge Gas is helping Red Lake Fire Rescue reduce fire and carbon monoxide deaths.

The service has received 120 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Project Zero, a public education campaign that will provide 7,500 alarms to residents in 35 Ontario municipalities.

Enbridge is investing $225,000 in the program designed for high risk and vulnerable residents.

Fire Chief Walter Scarrow says they are extremely grateful for the donation and the alarms will help them educate the public on the prevention of house fire and carbon monoxide exposure.

Scarrow says they will be working with community partners to distribute the alarms.

Luke Skaarup is the Director of Northern Region Operations with Enbridge and says these alarms are a critical second line of defence to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

Skaarup notes the first action that should be taken is properly maintain fuel-burning equipment.

Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg says “The objective of Project Zero is to deliver combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to Ontario communities who need them the most. It’s a program that fire departments can adopt to help educate their communities about the requirement for all Ontario homes to have a CO alarm if they have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage.”
