Remote forest fires continue to burn in Ontario’s Far North

A handful of forest fires that have scorched tens of thousands of hectares this summer continue to burn.

The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFFES) says six fires within the Red Lake Fire district are among a dozen considered still active in northwestern Ontario.

It includes a fire that forced the evacuation of residents from Deer Lake in July.

That fire covered almost 200 hectares, but it is not posing any threat and is being allowed to burn itself out.

The AFFES is allowing the other fires in the Far North to do the same.

The official end to the forest fire season happens on October 31st.
