The Canada-United States border will remain closed for at least another month.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair has tweeted that non-essential travel restrictions are now extended until October 21.
Blair says the government will continue to base their decisions on the best public health advice available to keep Canadians safe.
The announcement comes at a time when COVID-19 cases continue to rise in both countries.
Ontario is reporting a significant increase in the number of new cases Friday, recording more than 400 infections for the first time in more than 15 weeks.
Health officials reported 401 new cases, which is the highest number since June 2 when 446 infections were added.
Today’s count is also a large increase from Thursday when 293 new infections were added.
Once again all fingers are pointed to southern Ontario.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says there are 130 new cases in Toronto, 82 in Peel and 61 in Ottawa.
Elliott adds 67 per cent of the new cases are in people under the age of 40.
