One of the most polluted spots on the Canadian side of Lake Superior may soon be officially designated as recovered.
The Canada-U-S agency that monitors environmental issues is to consider a recommendation to upgrade a Terrace Bay creek to “an area of recovery.”
Fish that used to swim at the mouth of Bluebird Creek downstream from Terrace Bay’s pulp mill had cancerous tumors after being exposed to the mill’s toxic effluent.
But water quality in the creek improved after the mill installed modern treatment equipment that stopped the chemicals from entering the bay.
The area of recovery status means that, over time, the bay could become free of the pollution that made species like lake trout unsafe to eat.
