Mathematics and reading are an area of concern for the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
The Board has publicly released the 2012-2013 EQAO results.
There was an increase in the number of grade-3 students who were at or above the provincial standard in mathematics, while there was a decrease in reading and writing.
53% in reading ( down 2%), 56% in writing (down 5%) while mathematics saw 56% ( up 6%) of students at or above the provincial standard of level 3 or 4.
For grade-6 students, there were decreases in reading, writing and mathematics. 68% in reading (down 4%), 60% in writing (down 4%) and 42% in mathematics (down 7%) are achieving at or above the provincial standard.
Director of Education Sean Monteith says going forward, staff and parents will see a primary focus on reading and comprehension, additional training for teachers and principals, monthly reporting by primary teachers on every child’s reading progress in primary classrooms, a junior focus on language and math and the use of intervention teachers for students not at benchmark levels.
Monteith says instead of setting a number of goals, they are setting two or three big ones that require the most attention, and they continue to put students first.
