Some action at the vacant Pinewood Public School in Dryden.
Sergeant Greg Stein and Constable Andrew Johnston with the Thunder Bay Police Service were in town to offer immediate rapid deployment training to the Dryden Police Service.
Chief Rob Davis says it simulates a school shooting or threat, and it’s important that they do this training every year.
Davis points to recent incidents, such as the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, and says it could happen anywhere.
While it wasn’t mandatory for Davis to participate in the training, he says he chose to because since the DPS is a small service, it could be anyone responding to a call.
A number of local students also participated in the exercise, acting as victims of a shooting or stabbing. Davis says police training used to be very static and they realized that static-training methods don’t work, so bringing the students in makes it much more realistic and effective.
