Scouts Canada says it is sorry for the role it played in one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history.
Scouting was used as the program of choice along side the Church to strip the cultural identity of First Nations, Metis and Inuit children as part of Canada’s Indian Residential School and day school programming.
To which the organization, Scouts Canada, says it is sincerely sorry for its role in colonization.
In a statement it acknowledges what it believes to be a direct and complicit role in the eradication of Indigenous cultures within Canada.
It is also apologizing for the role it believes Scouting has played in perpetuating formal and informal systems of racism and discrimination.
It made the apology earlier this month, setting out an organizational six step journey towards reconciliation.
Which includes responsibility, repentance, an offer of repair and forgiveness.
The organization understands it cannot change the past, however believes it can change its present and future and by doing so build a new relationship of trust and mutual respect.
