There is a petition going around to save the local post office in Sioux Lookout.
Vice President of Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Karen Boyko, has more details.
“We’ve been given notice they are looking for a franchise, but on the same hand they won’t be filling in any positions as people leave and retire and they have been talking about Saturday closure for quite a while.”
Boyko says employees are wanting to know why they want to have a franchise if there’s not enough for a local corporate office.
Boyko let CKDR know that when Canada Post came out with their 5 year plan to get rid of door-to-door services, they didn’t say that it can impact smaller communities.
“As a matter of fact, 11 small post offices have been closed down this year,” she says.
Boyko says the Sioux Lookout Post Office doesn’t know where they are on the list, but she is sure they are on the list of closure.
She notes that once you’re on the list, there is nothing you can about it-the plan is already in effect.
Canadian Union of Postal Workers are trying to be proactive about the situation and they need help from their community.
Boyko says people can help by talking to their MP’s, contact Canada Post and ask to receive full postal service and let their voices be heard that they want their local post office to stay open.
A petition signing will be held in Sioux Lookout at the Seniors Centre from 1-3 p.m. tomorrow, to save the post office and keep door-to-door delivery across the country.
Boyko will also be in Sioux Towers tonight to bring the petition to those who can’t get out tomorrow.
If anyone can’t get down to the Seniors Centre tomorrow, Boyko says she will glady bring the petition to them
She can be reached at 1-807-737-2489 or President Colleen Moore at 1-807-737-1738.
