Sioux Lookout Remembers And Honours School Victims

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is remembering former students and survivors of Canada’s Indian Residential School system.

Mayor Doug Lawrance joined school survivor and honoured elder Garnet Angeconeb Monday to place a wreath at the corner of Wellington Street and Government Row in Sioux Lookout on behalf of the Municipal Truth and Reconciliation Committee.

This was a special acknowledgement to the families and communities directly impacted by the recent finding of 215 children’s remains at the Kamloops Indian Residential School site in British Columbia.

In a statement municipal officials say, “through this painful experience, may we acknowledge the effects of historic trauma, work to understand one another, and, together, let us foster peace and understanding through reconciliation.”
