Ontario’s police watchdog says there are no grounds for charges against a Provincial police officer in the death of a North Spirit First Nation man.
41-year-old Dalius Kakegamic died in hospital a week after being arrested on a criminal charge back in June.
Kakegamic was taken to the Red Lake OPP detachment after his arrest.
Later that day, he was taken to Red Lake Hospital and then to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after being found in medical distress in his cell.
SIU director Ian Scott says there is no suggestion that Kakegamic was mistreated while in custody.
Scott says Kakegamic’s rapid deterioration and death appear to be related to a prior medical condition.
