Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared two provincial police officers after a stolen car they were chasing crashed in the Marathon area, injuring the two teen occupants.
The Special Investigations Unit says the officers started pursuing a speeding car on the Trans-Canada Highway in Schreiber on September 11th and determined it was stolen.
Speeds reached 170 kilometres per hour and the officers had difficulty keeping the car in sight.
Police located the car after it left the road on a turn and slammed into a rock cut beside the highway.
Investigators say the 14-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger suffered broken bones and internal injuries in the crash.
SIU director Ian Scott says the officers followed proper procedures during the pursuit and the driver was responsible for the crash and injuries to him and his passenger.
