Six Million Dollars Earmarked For Winter Ice Roads

The provincial government is providing six million dollars this year to construct the winter road system in northern Ontario.

Northern Development minister Greg Rickford this will connect a number of first nation communities.

“To continue supporting the construction and operation of a 3,170 kilometer temporary winter road system,” Rickford told MPP’s at Queen’s Park last week.

“These investments link 32 isolated first nations communities and the town of Moosenee together the provincial highway network.”

Rickford adds the winter ice roads province a necessary link to the south.

“This improves the health, social, and economic prospects to serve those communities and forms the basis for important corridors in the future to serve these communities.”

The winter road system isn’t usually up and running until at least January to make sure the ice is thick enough to handle the truck traffic.
