The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority is receiving provincial funding to expand mental health services for Residential School survivors.
The money will help the agency deliver integrated, culture-based mental health and addictions trauma care to Indigenous people experiencing pain, loss and trauma as a result of the Residential School system.
The funding enables the agency to hire psychiatrists, social workers and wellness workers and supports the training and education of staff and community members.
It also allows the SLFNHA to develop models of traditional healing, such as healing circles and sweat lodge ceremonies, as well as the purchase of supplies and equipment, including gardening and traditional harvesting supplies.
It is part of an $800,000 announcement by the Ontario government to eight Indigenous health teams.
