Smoke Drifting Into First Nations Communities

North Spirit Lake First Nation is still not threatened from a large fire burning just 8-kilometres southeast of the far north community.

The blaze is now at 6,466 hectares in size.

Officials say crews are making good progress on the fire and have managed to push it away from the community.

Air attack continues on the blaze.

Crews are also working on an out-of-control fire burning 20-kilometres southwest of Weagamow First Nation.

The blaze is listed at 50-hectares and hose lines have been set-up to contain it.

A heat warning in northwestern Ontario remains in place.

The hot and humid weather has resulted in a high to extreme fire hazard across the region.

There are currently 18-active fires, with four still burning out of control.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry warns that smoke may be drifting into several communities in the far north due to wild fires in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout districts as well as Manitoba.
