The Mayor of Dryden is in favour of tolls being set up on Northern Ontario highways.
Premier Kathleen Wynne suggests it might help municipalities cover the costs to replace roads and bridges.
Nuttall says that there’s lots of work needed in this area and the benefits would be more revenue coming into municipalities and the infrastructure repairs, if they decide on it.
Nuttall compares the situation with Highway 427 in Toronto, which bills drivers if they use it.
However another mayor from Northwestern Ontario is against the idea.
Fort Frances Mayor Roy Avis says earmarking a portion of stumpage fees to road repairs may be a better plan. He says moving the wood over our highways and through our municipalities, would result in a per cubic meter charge that would be incorporated into that cost.
Avis feels that because of the difference in traffic volumes, toll fees in northern Ontario would be far greater than those in the south.
