Some Support For New Food Nutritious Labelling

A Public Health Dietitian for the Northwestern Health Unit believes new front-of package nutrition labelling requirements will be beneficial.

Zoe Brenner says the new symbol will be required in 2026 on foods that are high in saturated fat, sugars or sodium.

“I do look forward to seeing the positive potential that the new labelling regulations will have on some individuals and potentially the food industry,” says Brenner.

“But again, this only a piece of the puzzle so I really do hope to see continued efforts by Health Canada and the Canadian government to create a supportive food environment.”

She adds this a good first step.

“It’s great that Health Canada is providing this opportunity for people to have an informed choice, but having a nutritious diet shouldn’t fall completely on individual responsibility. Initiatives like this nutritious labelling and education are really just one piece of the puzzle when we’re supporting heathy eating and living in Canada.”

Brenner notes living a healthy lifestyle isn’t possible due to budget restrictions and stresses the government needs to address that.
