Ontario may have scrapped its spring bear hunt three years ago, but Manitoba confirmed yesterday its hunt is going ahead this year.
The Winnipeg Humane Society, has been working for years to get the hunt banned in the province, arguing it orphans cubs whose mothers are accidently shot.
The Manitoba Lodge and Outfitters Association says the hunt brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, almost all of it from the United States.
It adds without the hunt, there would be 11-hundred more bears around to encounter humans.
Ontario banned its spring hunt in 1999 and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has launched a court battle to have it reinstated.
