State Of Emergency On Two Northern Reserves

Emergency Management Ontario warns conditions on two northern Ontario reserves already hit by flooding could worsen as the ice breaks up.
Flooding and sewer backups have plunged the Attawapiskat and Kashechewan reserves into a state of emergency.
The floods have triggered the evacuation of Attawapiskat’s hospital and the shutdown of the two community schools.
Patients at the hospital have been moved to facilities off-reserve as a precaution.
NDP MP Charlie Angus says heavy snowfall followed by a rapid melt have overwhelmed “sub-standard” infrastructure on the First Nations.
Angus blames the federal government, not mother nature, and says the situation can only get worse.
The region has a history of spring flooding, but the waters rose early this year, while local rivers are still frozen.
