The Dryden Eagles thought they would be playing in a ‘win and you’re in’ game but things changed right before puck drop and the Eagles are now out of he 2017 OFSAA Boys Hockey championship.
A Campbellford upset win over St. Mary’s threw a monkey wrench into plans, forcing Dryden to instead focus on scoring at least five goals in a tiebreak situation on Wednesday.
Dryden played their best game of the tournament but couldn’t score enough in a 3-0 victory over 10th ranked Widdifield from North Bay.
Keith Wrolstad led efforts with a goal and an assist.
Jacob Lugli and Randy Russell also found the back of the net.
Jace Gamble was sensational once again, making 24-saves for the shutout.
Dryden peppered 34 shots on the Wildcats net.
The Eagles were impressive at OFSAA, finishing with a 1-1-1 record.
The same record is also keeping the host Muskies out of the playoffs.
There absence now means there will be a new provincial champion.
The NorWOSSA silver medalists are advancing to the elite eight after the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints came storming back to win their final game 3-2.
The Saints were losing 2-0 in the third period.
The Kenora team will play the St. Mary’s Crusaders in Wednesday nights Quarter-Final.
