Student Enrolment Expected To Go Up In The Fall

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is expecting a slight increase in student enrolment in the fall.

Richard Findlay is the Superintendent of Business and says they are looking at a three percent increase at the elementary level and one percent at the secondary level.

“We’re looking at an increase in enrolment just because a lot of students didn’t attend (last school year),” states Findlay.

“We’re still down significantly, probably six percent overall compared to two years ago. But if students come back, we’re expecting they will once the pandemic dies down, and people are fully vaccinated and families feel comfortable sending their students to school.”

Findlay adds the figures are just preliminary at this point. The actual student enrolment will be calculated at the end of October.

“We budgeted conservatively on the enrolment and hopefully we’ll have more students coming back that did not attend last year, which would be good news for us.”

Findlay adds that about a quarter of their students have opted to go to school virtually in the fall, but that could go down as September draws closer.
