Red Lake Classic Cancelled

The final walleye tournament of the summer has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Red Lake Fall Classic, traditionally held on the Labour Day long weekend, won’t be taking place this year.

Chair of the Committee Liz Harder says it was a difficult decision but no one can predict when the health crisis may subside.

Premier Doug Ford has encouraged the cancellation of all fishing tournaments in the province this year.

All teams currently registered will have their position and entry fees held for next year’s tournament.

Here is the official statement from organizers:

The Red Lake Fall Classic Committee has made a very tough decision to cancel the 2020 Red Lake Fall Classic Fishing Tournament. Since no one can predict when the COVID -19 pandemic may subside, we feel that it would be very irresponsible of us to hold such a large fishing tournament- especially during these times when we are told to socially distance and Ontario’s Premier encouraging the cancellation of all fishing tournaments within the province this year.

We are extremely grateful to the sponsors and the anglers who have year after year continued to support this event.

All teams currently registered will have their position and entry fees held for next year’s tournament. We have extended our current registration for past anglers to the end of April. Any teams who wish to cancel their entries, and lose their position for next year’s tournament, can contact the committee by emailing contact rlfconline@gmail.com or on Facebook.

Fort Frances Bass Classic Cancelled

Another major fishing tournament in northwestern Ontario has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The latest casualty is the Fort Frances Bass Championship scheduled for July.

This would have been the 26th year of the event.

Refund cheque’s are already going out.

The Dryden Walleye Classic and Emo Walleye Classic have already been cancelled.

The status of other fishing tournaments have yet to be determined.

Premier Says Fishing Season Won’t Be Delayed

Despite COVID-19, fishing season will open as normal in Ontario.

That’s the word from Premier Doug Ford.

However, Ford is encouraging organizers of fishing derbies and tournaments to cancel their events this year.

“Fishing will still be open, but the fishing derbies, we’re requesting, we’re not putting an order in, but I think it’s common sense, we don’t want the fishing derbies to happen.”

With some boat launches closed, (City of Dryden launches remain open), Ford is encouraging anglers to get out, mind their personal distances, and fish from shore.

“If people want to make sure of their social distance and they are on the shore and they want to throw a reel and a hook in the water, than by all means, as long as they focus on the social distancing rules.”

Ford says he doesn’t see any issue of going outside and getting some fresh air as long as you are following the rules.

Walleye season is scheduled to start the third Saturday in May.

Emo Walleye Classic Cancelled

The status of major fishing tournaments across northwestern Ontario remains up in the air due to the coronavirus.

However, the line has been cut on one of the first events of the year.

The Emo Walleye Classic won’t be held this year.

It was scheduled for the end of May.

In a Facebook post, organizers say it was a very hard decision to make, but felt the safety of the community was more important.

2019 Red Lake Fall Classic Results

Congratulations to Jason LeBlanc and Tim Szaflik – the 2019 Red Lake Fall Classic champions!

The pair lead the standings yesterday with 13.40lbs and the big fish of the day at 7.55lbs – and followed it up with 10.61lbs today – for a tournament total of 24.01lbs.

The top 5 were:

  1. Jason LeBlanc and Tim Szaflik – 24.01lbs
  2. JP Kennedy and Dave Koss – 23.76lbs
  3. Larry Meadows and John Butts – 23.34lbs
  4. Andy Colla and Domenic Vita – 22.88lbs
  5. Darren and Kohl Wrolstad – 22.74lbs

Prizes and trophies were handed out at the Royal Canadian Legion. Highlights below.

2019 Red Lake Fall Classic Day One Results

Day one is in the books at the 2019 Red Lake Fall Classic!

Congratulations to Jason LeBlanc and Tim Szaflik, Boat #19, leading the pack with a total weight of 13.40lbs. That’s almost a 1.4lb lead over 2nd place.

The big fish of the day was 7.55lbs, also brought in by day one leaders Jason LeBlanc and Tim Szaflik.

An annual tradition, the Junior Red Lake Fall Classic took place from noon until 2 today at Government Dock in Red Lake. The absolute highlight was THIS!

Red Lake Fall Classic – Day 1 – EARLY Results

It’s been a wild start to the 2019 Red Lake Fall Classic – with TWO boats heading back to the scales by 8am to weigh big fish.

The first team in was boat 9, Mitchell and Matthew Corbett, weighing in at 5.77lbs. It took the bait within the first 30 seconds in the water – before they even had a second line in.

No sooner than they left the scales than boat 19, Jason LeBlanc and Tim Szaflik, pulled up to weigh in THEIR big walleye – 7.55lbs! They also weighed in their two under slots for a day one, three fish total of 11.18lbs. They headed back out to hunt down one more big fish for the day.

The first flight of boats has to check in by 4pm today, and the Junior tournament starts at noon at Government Dock. Kids are required to wear a PFD, and minnows will be provided. It’s always a lot of fun!

Red Lake Fall Classic This Weekend

The final fishing tournament of the Summer is this weekend in Red Lake.

The 27th Annual Fall Classic is Saturday and Sunday, with a rules meeting tonight. (Friday, August 30th)

Liz Harder is the Chair of the organizing committee and she says you can expect a lot of big fish this year.

Harder is anticipating 130 teams but notes they currently have two openings.

Launch times both days start at 7:00am and go until 7:45am.

Weigh-in’s will occur around 2:00pm each day.

One of the highlights will be the Kids Tournament on Saturday from noon until 2:00pm.

Harder says “Just remember to bring a lifejacket and minnows are supplied.”

Herbeck And Ternowski Dryden Bass Champs

Danny Herbeck and Jared Ternowski are the 2019 Dryden Bass tournament champions.

The pair reeled in a total weight of 20.30 pounds on Sunday.

Following in second place was Bryan and Jen Bakos, sponsored by Indian Point Camp, with 19.42 pounds.

Jeff Dingwall and Mike Cortens came in third.

The Big Fish prize for an Adult Youth team went to John and Aidan Butts, who also won the top weight for an Adult Youth team.

As a result, they walked away with a boat, motor and trailer package.

The biggest fish overall was caught by Larry Shine and Carey Basaraba at 4.88-pounds.

In the first place specialty category it was Jamie and Ashley Bruce weighing in with 19.60 pounds.

Jeff Park is one of the organizers of the Bass Tournament and he says the 46 team turnout was their biggest ever.

Park says the event was an overwhelming success but notes he is always looking for feedback on ways to improve.

He says one possible change is to extend the tournament day by one extra hour.

Park adds the event wouldn’t be possible without their volunteers and prize sponsors.
