Talks Of Transportation Corridor At KDMA Meeting

A transportation corridor in Northwestern Ontario was among many things discussed this morning at the Kenora District Municipal Association conference.
The Economic Development Manager for Sioux Lookout made a presentation highlighting why an East-West route going to the Ring of Fire is better then a North-South road.
Florence Bailey says they hope to conduct a feasibility study, with the assistance of government funding.
It will cost about 15 thousand dollars to scope the terms of reference and have the consultant apply for the grants, and then when those are in place, the study will cost about 200 thousand dollars.
Bailey says they hope to have the study completed by the end of the year.
Instead of focusing on strictly an East-West route, Bailey says that a North-South railway would also work.
She says that railways are easier on the environment and are less expensive to maintain.
It costs about 300 thousand dollars to repair one truck, about 50 thousand trucks will use the corridor each year.
The purpose of the corridor is to provide a direct method of access to transport goods and services through Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake to northern communities, and to the Ring of Fire.
