Educating the educators on forestry practices in the region.
That was the purpose of a recent Teacher’s Tour held in Dryden for over 20-instructors from Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Ignace.
The initiative was a joint one between the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Domtar and the Keewatin Patricia District School Board.
Spokesperson Dianne Loewen says the sessions focused on forest management planning, the science of forestry, legislation, forest certification and operations.
Loewen says the goal was to help folks understand that the decisions that they are making today, impact the sustainability of the forest for the long-term.
She says another focus was on operations at the Domtar Mill and how fibre flow out of the woods impacts their facility.
This was a pilot project and Loewen hopes to offer it next year in Kenora and expand it to other communities after that.
