More information has been released in relation to the incident that closed Highway 17 west of Thunder Bay at around 11am.
Ontario Provincial Police, Upsala Fire Department and Superior North Emergency Medical Services responded to the three vehicle collision around 10km west of Shabaqua.
Investigations determined the accident happened because the westbound passenger vehicle lost control and crossed the centre line striking an eastbound pick-up truck as well as a tractor/trailer unit.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was treated with first aid on site and has been transported by ambulance to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver and passenger of the tractor trailer and the lone driver of the pick-up truck did not suffer any injuries.
The highway is open to one lane and the investigation continues.
