Hurricane Sandy hasn’t hit Northwestern Ontario, but it’s always good to be prepared.
Catherine Benesch from the Canada Safety Council says having water and non-perishable food is a must.
Some other things to include in an emergency kit are:
– a manual can opener
– crank or battery powered flashlight with extra batteries
– crank or battery powered radio with extra batteries
– a first aid kit
– extra keys to your car and home
– some cash in smaller bills and change for payphones
– a copy of your emergency plan and contact information
– if applicable, prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities, and food and water for pets
– candles, matches or a lighter
– change of clothing and footwear for each household member
– sleeping bag or warm blanket
– toiletries
– hand sanitizer
– utensils
– garbage bags
– toilet paper
– water purifying tablets
– basic tools, such as a hammer, pliers, wrench and pocket knife
– a whistle
– duct tape
