This is “Save the Experimental Lakes” Area day in several communities including Dryden and Sioux Lookout.
The declaration is an attempt to save the research facility west of Vermilion Bay.
An information session is being held at the Sioux Lookout Legion at 7 o’clock.
Organizer Anne Saltel says they will talk about the importance of the ELA and what people can do to keep it open.
Saltel says public science is so important and we need to ensure the unbias approach the ELA takes remains in place.
Kenora is also taking part in this day of action.
Some high profile guests are attending a forum at 5:30.
Organizer Peter Kirby says they are expecting Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Bruce Heyer, four scientists and a number of other supporters as well.
Kirby says it looks like the federal government is ready to walk away from the ELA.
He says Canada has given notice to Ontario that it wishes to terminate the agreement between the two levels of government effective September 2013.
He says that means the Feds can close the site at any time.
