Town Beach Re-Opening In Sioux Lookout

Some good news for Sioux Lookout Residents right before the long weekend begins.

The Northwestern Health Unit says the Town Beach is being re-opened for use today.

The beach has been closed since 2016 due to concerns over a sheen or shininess on the sand and since has remained closed for ongoing investigations and planned construction work.

Testing shows the remaining sheen and wood flakes may contain substances that come from crude oil or incomplete burning of materials and can be harmful if a person spends a lot of time playing in or touching the material.

Residents are being reminded that although the beach can now be used safely, visitors may still occasionally encounter black wood flakes and sheen in the water.

People with children are also encouraged to watch them more carefully so they avoid playing in or drinking the material.

Beach-goers are also told to wash with soap and water if they come in contact with the substance.
