Local students are getting a crash course on Canada’s treaties with its aboriginal populations.
This is Treaties Recognition Week, and area schools are talking about their importance.
Frances Kavanaugh is Grand Chief of Treaty #3 and he says the week gives them a chance to set the record straight on Canada’s early history and the interaction between aboriginals and settlers.
Kavanaugh says learning about our shared history will help reduce racial intolerance.
He notes it’s disturbing to see the leader of the U.S. use bigotry, hatred and racism to support his campaign.
Kavanaugh says education is key in reconciliation efforts.
