Treaty #3 Supports New Safer Ontario Act

Grand Council Treaty #3 is applauding policing changes announced by the provincial government.

Legislation introduced last week would hold first nations police services to the same standards as police departments in the rest of the province.

First Nations would also be able to create their own Police Service Boards.

Grand Chief Francis Kavenaugh says it was time to modernize the Act and make it more relevant.

He says the Safer Ontario Act addresses some of challenges identified by indigenous people who come into contact with the police.
