The Trillium Gift of Life Network is urging area residents to become organ donors.
The recommendation follows a memo from the Network to the Dryden Hospital indicating that some individuals have decided not to register because Dryden doesn’t have the capacity to deal with organ transplants.
President Frank Markel says that’s simply not the case.
Markel adds the Dryden Hospital does have the facilities for tissue recovery surgery and adds a team could be sent there at any time if need be.
Markel adds in more serious cases patients can be sent from the Dryden Airport to Winnipeg or Thunder Bay for organ recovery testing and surgery.
He notes 1,500 people in Ontario are waiting for a transplant and notes last year they had only 200-deceased organ donors in the Province.
