Twinning Of Highway 17 West Of Kenora Could Start This Spring

For the first time in years there seems to be some optimism that the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Kenora might go ahead sooner rather than later.

Kenora MP Bob Nault says all of the engineering has been completed, they just need some environmental permitting now.

He adds First Nations are very much in support of the project.

Nault admits the money that had been ear-marked for the twinning went to double-laning Highway 17 east of Thunder Bay, but says the federal government is committed to financing the project.

Nault says with a new PC government in power, he believes they can break ground on the first phase of the project by next Spring at the latest.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford agrees the project should be able to move ahead quickly.

Rickford says he’s currently working with the Ministry of Transportation on the finer details, stressing the twinning is his top priority.

Rickford notes First Nation communities all seem to be onside now and are excited to see the project move forward.

He blames the delay on provincial Liberal foot dragging.
