Union Gas representatives are on the scene of a gas leak near J.W. Walker School in Fort Frances.
The area around the site has been cordoned off and approximately 150 residents have been evacuated.
Employees are turning off the natural gas supply to the area.
A controlled release of gas continues in order to give the company time to assess the safest way to respond to the situation, and allow customers access to natural gas.
The evacuation order could be lifted sometime this afternoon.
Evacuees are asked to attend the Memorial Sports Centre on Scott Street.
