An official at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre says a medical sample mistakenly sent to a woman who miscarried in Sioux Lookout was not a fetus.
A remote Northwestern First Nations community claims a miscarried fetus was mailed to the grieving mother earlier this month.
But Sciences Centre CEO Ron Saddington says the sample was not fetal material, but a surgical tissue sample.
Saddington says the Hospital did make a mistake by returning the tissue sample to the patient and not the original Hospital in Sioux Lookout.
Meantime, a third aboriginal family in the Northwest is now claiming the Thunder Bay Hospital mailed fetal remains to mothers who miscarried.
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman has ordered an investigation.
Smitherman says he is “angered and deeply concerned.” by this.
