Lots of public feedback at yesterday’s meetings regarding the Goliath Gold Project near Wabigoon.
One of the biggest concerns was the number of jobs the mine would create when it expects to open in early 2015.
Vice President Norm Bush says they are expecting to see about 1000 new jobs, both directly and indirectly.
They will be looking for certain qualifications, and will not be accepting apprentices right away.
Bush says they are currently in the early stages of development, which should finish up sometime early next year. They will then move on to construction and training of employees, then the actual mining and processing.
Senior Mine Engineer Mark Wheeler says the total mine life is about 10-12 years, but that’s only if they don’t find another ounce of gold.
He adds that the open pit should last about 5 years, but after year 2 they will have an underground mine as well.
The mine will be located in an area where there will be few roads to be build, there will be easy electrical power access and access to natural gas which will reduce their carbon footprint.
The pit will be about 1-1.5km in length and about 400 meters across.
Environmental Technician Mac Potter says that they are currently doing a baseline study to understand the environment before they move even further.
Potter adds that they are doing surface water sampling each month, and it will continue throughout the life of the mine.
When looking at the actual productivity of the mine, Bush says that they estimate the mine will produce almost 100,000 ounces of gold per year.
