Victory for Grassy Narrows First Nation

Grassy Narrows is declaring victory in its 11-year court battle to stop logging on traditional lands.
A judge has ruled in favour of the First Nation, which challenged the Province’s right to permit industrial logging on its traditional lands.
Chief Simon Fobister says the judge has ruled that Ontario doesn’t have the power to interfere with their treaty rights.
Fobister says he hopes the ruling will encourage the provincial government to continue talking with them about their land rights.
Fobister says the decision won’t necessarily bring to an end their nine year long blockade of forest access roads in their community.
He says more dialogue is needed before that can happen.
The First Nation’s lawyer says the ruling will likely have legal implications for similar disputes in Ontario and across Canada.
