The Chief of Wabauskang First Nation is fuming mad with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
Leslie Cameron says last month, the government issued a 3-year permit to an individual, allowing mechanized stripping of traditional territory in the Laird Lake area, which is close to Red Lake.
As a result, heavy equipment will be used to remove vegetation and soil as a part of mining exploration.
Cameron says that it’s ridiculous the government has issued this permit, adding that the affected land has been used by his family and the community for generations.
Since learning of the permit, the First Nation has voiced its displeasure through letters to the Provincial Government and high ranking officials with the Ministry. Cameron says they have received support from Grand Council Treaty #3, the Chiefs of Ontario and other First Nation political organizations.
Cameron says people seem to think that they can walk all over Wabauskang, but as long as he’s leader “that’s not going to happen”.
