By a vote of 6 to 1, Fort Frances Town Council has decided to raise water and sewer rates by 10 percent for all classes retroactive to July 1st.
Mayor Dan Onichuk was the only holdout insisting the town should have adopted the original plan drawn up by a consultant given impending new provincial regulations.
However, businesses had been opposed to that move because of steep rate hikes of roughly 188 percent over the next several years.
Besides a 10 percent across the board increase, town council has to take more than 316-thousand dollars out of reserves to cover water and sewer expenses for 2005.
