Winter Storm Warning Continues – Travel Not Recommended

Hazardous winter conditions are expected today, tonight and tomorrow with most of our area under a Winter Storm Warning.

A large low pressure system over the Northern Plains States is expected to intensify into a major winter storm as it tracks across Northwestern Ontario tonight then into Far Northern Ontario on Tuesday.

Snow is expected to intensify this afternoon then continue through tonight into Tuesday. Widespread total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are likely, with locally higher amounts possible.

A brief period of freezing rain or ice pellets is possible in some areas today.

Strong and gusty northwesterly winds are expected to whip up the freshly fallen snow tonight and Tuesday, resulting in very low visibility from blowing snow especially in exposed areas.

Environment Canada suggests we consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

The Winter Storm Warning includes Dryden, Vermilion Bay, Kenora, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances. Storm Alerts have been posted for Ignace and Atikokan.
