A large piece of Boreal Forest along the Ontario-Manitoba boundary is being proposed as a world heritage site.
The two Provincial Governments, along with five First Nations, are asking the United Nations to recognize the region just west of Kenora.
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says a U-N designation would mean a lot.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says the designation would help protect the area.
The Pikangikum First Nation and the Whitefeather Forest Forest Management Corporation are two of the partners
involved in the process.
The application was sent off to Paris Wednesday.
It could take another year and a half before UNESCO makes a decision.
Gord Jones is the project manager and says this is a unique area worthy of designation.
There are more than 900 World Heritage sites already designated by UNESCO, including Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and Banff National Park.
