A Winnipeg man has been hit with a massive fine for illegally building a structure on his property on Lake of the Woods.
Ian Rentz has been convicted and fined the maximum $10,000 for breaking the terms and conditions of a work permit.
He was granted permission to build a garage but an inspection found he was acutally building a guest cottage.
His property is in an area where construction must be authorized by a permit and follow specific guidelines.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says Rentz has a previous history of similar violations.
He has been ordered to bring the structure into compliance or remove it entirely by the end of September.
