Treaty #3 Approved For Internet Project

High speed internet service will be available in most communities in Treaty #3 in the next few years.

A $51 million application has been approved for a broadband connectivity project to link 21 communities with fiber internet service.

It comes from a joint funding announcement by the federal and provincial governments of $148 million for northwestern Ontario.

Grand Chief Frances Kavanaugh says the Treaty #3 Territorial Internet Connectivity Project has been years in the making.

He says issues facing Indigenous communities due to COVID-19 were made significantly worse because of the lack of connectivity.

The project is expected to be competed by 2025 and Kavanaugh notes when done, it will ensure residents of Treaty #3 will have access to health care services, attend school and work from home when necessary.
